First Look: Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

When I first heard about MK vs DCU, There were all sorts of mixed feelings going on inside me. My love for Mortal Kombat is nothing like my love for DC comics. MK is for getting all that pent up rage out of your system by burning a guy alive or throwing him down a huge pit filled with spikes. Its Fun! While DC, on the other hand, has a much more hero-ish sense. Doing what’s right and bringing all evil to justice. You must admit, thinking about the two worlds crossing paths sounds awful in the beginning, but I’m here to tell you that it works brilliantly.

Not only does it work, but it actually does both games justice! The DC world is still all for the greater good by noble means and the Mortal Kombat world is still all for killing everyone. Just as the gods intended…

Story: Good. Maybe a little confusing at the start, but with the concept as it was, they did a great job in tying the two games without going completely insane. I havent fully gotten through both sides of the story mode, but so far, I’m surprised by how much it makes sense. It doesn’t skew either world’s main story and manages to work the goods and bads of all characters, plus they brought back Captain Marvel! Its about time him and Superman had another go at each other.

Gameplay: I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but….Its kinda boring….. I know, I know. Its got all the cool characters and has their special moves, but when you look at them closer, you can see that most of the normal moves are copy/paste and the button combos are all pretty much the same. It definitely makes it easier to play without having to pause and check the Moves List menu every 2 seconds, but somehow, it feels dumbed down when you dont have to. This could have been done due to the story modes. You have to play through chapters and each character has their own spot. with all the switching, it would only make sense to make the controls more similar. I hope this is just my opinion and others like the gameplay, though. Everything else is top notch. One more thing, Where’s Cyrax? and more importantly, Where’s Aquaman?!

Not so Final Thoughts: So far, its solid. A great story mode somehow makes up for lack of kombat. Hopefully things will get better when I unlock Darkseid. Until then, me and Captain Marvel will just keep plowing through the game to the end
