Using Chat on the Zen X-Fi

The chat function on the Creative Zen X-Fi has confused many people. I’ve set up a video guide to help. I’ll write it out step by step in text below the video.

Firstly, you’ll need to connect to a wireless gateway (not shown in video). Here’s how to do it:

Make sure that your player’s wireless LAN feature is set to AUTO.

  1. Go to System from your Main Menu.
  2. Choose Wireless LAN.
  3. Check if it is set to AUTO.

To connect to a network:

  1. Navigate to Online.
  2. Choose Media Server.
  3. Go to Available Network.
  4. Select from a list of available networks
  • For secured networks lock, enter the network password (or encryption key).
  • For public hotspots, you may be required to enter your Logon ID and password.

The above information is from this Creative Support page.

  1. Log on to creative.com/getstarted/zenxfi
  2. Click “Chat Account Setup”.
  3. Click on “Set up your chat account”.
  4. Register your information.
  5. Check that e-mail account and click on the link that they sent to you.
  6. Now on the player, go to Online>My Profile
  7. Push the center button
  8. Push ‘Activate My Profile’
  9. Enter your information on all three: nickname, e-mail address, and password. Be sure you put the correct values in, as it’s difficult at first to put in the correct letters.
  10. Push Okay, then wait for it to connect.

You are now connected to the Creative chat servers. You can now chat with others on the Creative server. The following is how to add the Windows Live and Yahoo! Messenger gateways to the player.

  1. Go to Online>My Friends and login.
  2. When you’re on the My Friends page, push the options menu, then IM Chat Gateways.
  3. Select your preferred gateway.
  4. Enter your information then click “OK” and sign in.
  5. After a few seconds, your all your friends should show up.

Having problems? Firstly, check the data for your nickname, e-mail address and password. It took me several times because I forgot a number or left out a letter. If that doesn’t solve it, leave a note below or post in the EpiZENter.net forums.<a href=” >object>

@maria You're not the only one who has had problems with the underscore issue, see if this helps: When you get to the keypad, hit the options button, then click on Symbols and then the underscore.
Also, the wifi on the X-Fi is very immature. That is, it's kinda like Creative stuck it on to the player towards the end and didn't really do deep programming. It may not be the player, however, and it could be your router blocking transmission from the player to the MSN/Yahoo server. See if it's detected by the router and open some ports.
